Xavier Jabbar joined Tryon in 2019, first working at Tryon Patient Connect. Always asking, “What do I need to know to help people,” he memorized every phone and fax number, as well as the location of every practicing clinician.
Xavier has grown with Tryon and is now the patient care coordinator lead for the Steele Creek and Pineville locations. He also co-leads the BE Tryon, belonging and engagement committee. Learn more about Xavier.
What was your journey to Tryon like?
After attending Livingstone College in Salisbury, I came back home to Charlotte. I graduated with a music degree and academic honors; my dream was to be a high school band director. After graduate school at UNC Charlotte, I became a substitute teacher, then worked as an in-school suspension coordinator. I got burned out and by March 2019, needed a change. My friend’s mother gave my resume to Gina Wynn, Tryon’s first human resources coordinator. I told her that I wanted to serve and help people – to be a difference maker – and she hired me on the spot. I was hired to work in the TPC. I was determined to help as much as I could, so I memorized the phone and fax numbers, and the location of every doctor.
After two years, I wanted to sharpen my skills further, so I became a patient care coordinator (PCC) at Steele Creek. By the end of 2022, I was the lead PCC for Steele Creek and Pineville.
Since I have been around so long, I am the person who gets called with strange questions.
What is different about Tryon as an employer?
Tryon has a spirit of team building that I have not experienced before. There’s a natural team element that is assumed. If you need help, the team will adjust to support you. The greater good is noted; our management and managers let us know that we’re here to serve the patients. The TPC is the closest team that I have worked with, and my Steele Creek team is like a family.
How has Tryon helped you grow professionally?
Tryon has shown me that you can always learn more, and you can do more than you think. Always be willing to step in and help because you will gain more professionally. And you never know the difference you will make for somebody.
I also appreciate that Tryon has given us an opportunity with the belonging and engagement committee – BE Tryon. I joined and the team voted for me to be the chair of the committee with VP and coordinator Julia Hagan. I was very humbled by that.
Please reach out to the members of the BE Tryon committee and bring your feedback and suggestions. It doesn’t matter if it’s uncomfortable or difficult; honest communication can improve culture. We also want BE Tryon to be a place where we recognize the good things team partners are doing that don’t get acknowledged. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
